What is a Continuously Variable Transmission?
A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a type of automatic transmission that provides more useable power, increased fuel economy or gas mileage and a smoother driving experience than a traditional automatic transmission.
What are the differences between a typical automatic transmission and a
continuously variable transmission?
The controls for a continuously variable transmission are the same as those found on an automatic transmission - there is no clutch pedal and the same transmissions read-outs are found on a CVT as are found on a typical automatic transmission - i.e. P-R-N-D-L.
However, while an automatic transmission has a set number of gear ratios (usually 4, 5 or 6) the continuously variable transmission can constantly change the relationship of engine speed to car speed.
When driving a car with a continuously variable transmission, you never hear or feel the transmission shift -- it simply raises and lowers the engine speed as needed, calling up higher engine speeds (or RPMs) for better acceleration and lower RPMs for better fuel economy while cruising.
Some people find cars with continuously variable transmission confusing or strange at first because of the way cars with continuously variable transmissions sound.
Continuously Variable Transmissions, or simply CVT's use a belt in the transmission that permits the car to access an unlimited number of gears or gear positions.
Continuously Variable Transmissions provide a number of important advantages over the standard 4, 5 or 6 speed automatic transmissions, including superior fuel economy, smoother acceleration and extended transmission life.
Continuously Variable Transmissions are now being used in "direct drive wind turbines."
